NBA - Boston Celtics v Los Angeles Lakers

I am in favor of the Celtics to be crowned the 2008 world champions. This means that my pick is for the Celtics to win the series.

This is the ultimate NBA rivalry but the history clearly favors the Celtics. However the future cannot be built on the past. Therefore, I would articulate a couple thoughts I have for the series.

Here I chose to go with the Celtics because I believe that the odds shouldn’t be as much in Lakers’ favor as they currently are.

Why?

Throughout the regular season the Celtics have been the best team in the league and still are according to my opinion. Of course when I say team I do mean team. The Celtics are not Pierce’s team, they are not Garnet’s team, they are not Allen’s team, nor are they the Big Three’s team. They have proved that they can win with even contributions from all the players and when one has a bad day somebody else is going to step up and cover his deficit. Can you imagine the Lakers trying to win when Kobe has a bad night? Clearly I don’t see this happening against the Celtics and I am more than sure that Kobe will have more than one bad night in these finals.

The Celtics is the team that managed to collect most wins than any other team during the regular season and they will have the home court advantage in the finals. They are a consistent team, although inexperienced in this kind of challenges like a final, but still passionate and certainly more confident than the previous series.

Right after the end of the regular season and slightly before the playoffs the Celtics were still the big favorite to win it all and the Lakers were only third favorites to win the 2008 title. What has changed during these playoffs to turn everything upside down? The only thing I have seen happening is the Celtics getting stronger and gaining experience and confidence game after game during the playoffs.

The Celtics beat the Lakers in the regular season twice both in LA and Boston in double digits!!! Some will say that the Lakers didn’t have P. Gasol back in December, sure, but the Lakers will not have A. Bynum in the finals like they did have him back in December. In addition Gasol hasn’t contributed in the Playoffs as much as every basketball fun would expect him to contribute. Do I expect him to get better in the finals? No, absolutely not. He certainly doesn’t have the experience to step up in a final or the confidence to carry on the Lakers if Kobe goes silent in a game. D. Fisher is a guy to keep your eyes on him at the Staples Center but on the road he suffers a lot. L. Odom’s performance is “any given night”!!!

According to my personal estimations the right odds should be around 1.85 for the Celtics and around 2.05 for the Lakers since the home court advantage favors the Celtics. Instead of this it is very likely to find the Lakers around 1.50 which I find ridiculous and the Celtics around 2.70 which I find extremely valuable.

In order to conclude, I would like to say that it is very sound according to my humble opinion to invest maximum stakes towards Celtics favor, since I have firm beliefs that the Celtics will bring forward all the strength and courage to finish the finals EVEN in less than 7 games and bring the championship back in Boston after 21 long years.
