I see some value here. Aris surprised me last week with a rather comfortable win against Olympiada, they had some problems in the first 3 QT but then they showed some discipline in the last QT to get a big lead and maintain it. Of course it was a game with great shooting % for them, rather unusually high for a first game in the league and given the significant changes occured n Aris bench (Herbert replacing Matzon) and roster. Despite what initially expected, Herbert showed some emphasis on defense just like Aris previous coach and what is more Aris exhibited in the court a tendency to adopt his style easily, they somehow seem bound as a team with so many changes and imo this was the key to get their first domestic win. Massey was as always a great contributer, it seems that this will be a very good year in his shoulders, but Terry made the difference with some good shots, a sector that Aris had always problems with.
Unicaja on the other hand, may have lost against Pamesa as more or less expected, but in my eyes they showed again that at the moment they are a team with the whole meaning of the word. Despite the loss of Jiri Welsh, they traditionally fight tough in defense, Kush and Popovich have smoothly fit in the roster, while Santiago and Ndong have an influential game and Scariolo provides them constantly when the play turns to 5-to-5. Despite the signing of Heislip, what this team only seems to lack is a steady supply in the offense, they sometimes are caught in misfiring and then their opponents get a tempo Unicaja is difficult to turn around. Scariolo showed in his statements that he counts much for Aris, he said actually he expects them to ''be better than last year, they have great experience in Europe and they have made already our lives difficult last year at top-16.'' He seems that he has made his homework and insisted on a hard defensive play to get something in return tomorrow.
No new asbences for Unicaja, they seem pretty solid ahead of this game and i think their style of play is perfect to cause an upset for Aris. Aris performs better against teams that like to run and shoot, thus when defense is solid they can take advantage of this ''run-n-gun'' game to control perfectly the game. Unicaja is the other way around, they like to take their offensive strategy to 20 secs. and do nothing wrong in their defense so Aris won't have the luxury of making too much mistakes here. After all Unicaja is a team with a month plays on their hands, on an ACB of greater quality than Greek Championship which just started and Aris is still actually experimenting as a team on the hands of his new- experienced though- coach. Providing under these circumstances a team that i rate better, coming fairly better prepared and with solid play identity as an underdog here against an Aris that may have potential but so far they are far from being called solid, i think is a mistake. Home factor is always there especially in Thessaloniki, however class and readiness is my lean here and in that sector Unicaja has my vote. In cases where the odds are with me in fact i don't actually have a reason not to go with them opening this group phase with a good performance.
