The 2009 season of the WNBA will begin this evening, as six games will occur across the US. After screening tonight games I decided to focus on one game that I like most. Seattle Storm changed a lot during the 9 month bye as Sheryl Swoopes retired and veteran Yolanda Griffith moved to Indiana but Suzy Baktovic, the Australian giant returned to the Storm after 4 years but she will not appear tonight because of her wedding and Janell Burse who still suffers of a shoulder problem. Swin Cash will be available tonight but we must remember that she did not play since March because of back surgery. As usual, the Storm will rely on Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird, while the first one is for sure one of the best three players in the league, the last year on the WNBA and the season in Russia may show us some signs that its not the same great player the we knew. Sacramento started last season very slowly due to main player injuries but managed to capture the last ticket to the playoffs. The Monarchs are a good home team with a terrific crowd and their line is based on veteran and well talented players. Rebekkah Brunson, Kara Lawson, Maiga â€“ Ba and Ticha Penicheiro have 38 WNBA years of experience combined in the highest level of this league and the combination with young and super talented young players such as Laura Harper, Crystal Kelly and the great rookie Courtney Paris can lead this team to the playoffs once again and if all those players will stay healthy the sky is the limit for this explosive team. Sacramento is deeper than Seattle and quite more balanced so I Iike their chances to pick their first win in the opening night of the league.

Barcelona – Real Madrid

After the win of Real in Israel last week against Maccabi things are quite clear in this group.Real Madrid and Barca will fight for the first place while Maccabi will try to win Alba and leave the competition without succeeding anything good this season.Barcelona at home is really “hot” and that forced the bookies to set a quite high line in my opinion if you think that is the original “el classico”.Maybe a 5-6 points line would be more fair here.Real according to the news does not face any problems and Barca will have Lakovic out once again but the Catalunians have learned to play without him so i just mention this information and this is not a reason that i am backing Real.The Madrid team will also have newcomer Kennedi Winston at the roster who was released by Turk Telekom and joined the Spanish squad.Maybe coach Plaza will give him some minutes as the American has experience in Euroleague playing for Panathinaikos last season.The two teams have met each other three times this year so there are not any secrets between them and this fact could lead in an even tougher much.If there was a special bet i would take Barca to win by 10 or less so Real +8 is a very good option IMO.

Crvena zvezda – Hemofarm

These two teams have played against each other three days ago in the same gym(Crvena Zvezda as a host in Belgrade)in which this match will be played,and the game ended with 91-65 Hemofarm win.And in a first game between these two,when Hemofarm was a host,the match ended with 84-65 Hemofarm win.Although Hemofarm had their first center Vukosavljevic on that one playing good(he is out for longer period of time due to the foot injury),Zvezda was also without absences(with Marinovic and Roberts-these two did not play in tuesday as they are injured).And in second match in this season between these two Hemofarm,again as a host,won by 15 a couple of weeks ago(88-73).And Zvezda is struggling without these two,that was obvious even in the Serbian cup last weekend.So,this Hemofarm just does not fit Zvezda s style of play,I believe the main reason are very aggressive guards are the main reason for that.Andre Owens is in absence of Marinovic their only true pg,but this guy is more of a scorer,a sg,and he seems to like playing more the shooting guard.Nemanja Bjelica is amazing talent,a 2.10 tall pg(Pesic forces him to play pg)but he used to have problems in protecting and distributing the ball against small and quick opponents like Pavkovic.Joksimovic and particulary Markovic are in great form lately,sf Krstovic is constantly putting on strong numbers,and interior line has really torchered Zvezda in tuesday(Macvan,Bobanovic and Bozovic have combined for 36 points and 14 rebs).So,in this game I believe that Hemofarm will be in advantage from inside and from outside.And I do not buy those stories about fixed matches or -they need to win momentum-.Hemofarm has destroyed Zvezda with+60 points difference in their three matches this year and they also need a W here,so this is another high stakes bet for me here,GL!

Maccabi Electra – Real Madrid

I was trying to avoid backing up Maccabi for the whole season,but after four consecutive losses in this season against the spanish teams I believe that it is time to go with them here.Arroyo s suspension has finished,he will play,coach Gershon has added backup pg to help him,and this guy,Dee Brown has already showed that he s capable.Another new signing,Charles Gaines still has to prove himself and he will surely have a chance tonight.Pini Gershon has his squad healthy and without absences,and although it will be tough to catch the margine from Madrid(+19),they are favourites in this one.Maccabi is a team that plays 50% better when at home,a great atmosphere and really loud audience helps a lot,and talented team like Maccabi,when gets that positive injection,very rarely failes to perform.Brown will have better night than in Madrid(2 points),Arroyo is always better in Tel Aviv,Eliyahu and Casspi can do it all,and Fisher is dominating inside.

Real has been struggling on the road for the whole season,they are on 3W 3L in the euroleague and this team,despite many changes in the roster(first they released Papadopulos,then they signed Van Der Spiegel,then they released Hosley and they have signed Winston,and they have promoted junior Montenegrian Mirotic) they still do not have any chemistry and their result depends a lot on a game of two men-Bullock and Reyes.Sometimes someone produces amazing performance like Llull(in a first game vs Barca)or Massey but that is not something that you can count on.However,it will be hard for Maccabi to catch that margine of 19 but I believe they should get a W here and really cover this margine of 4.5.(My margine would be 7 points).Mid stakes,GL!

CSKA Moscow – Siena

Cska Moscow meets at home Montepaschi Siena for the 4rth day of the 2nd phase as a favorite by 7 points.The Italians scored an impressive win at their home two weeks ago beating Cska by 18 points.Now coach Mesina of the Russians has to find a way to correct the mistakes his team did and lead Cska at the first place of the group.The Italian is one of the best coach in Europe at this time so expect many changes today at Moscow for the home team.The fact that Smodis is out again could be a reason for many people not to back Cska today but for me is only a reason not to back Cska with a bigger stake.The Slovenian is out but Moscow team has learned to play without him and there are solutions that could fill his gap.Siena for the first time in her history won the Italian Cup last weekend and had to give three games in a row.No after only three days has to play against the best team in Europe away from home so i expect many players to be a little tired.Rotation is deep for the Italian squad but again is not easy to find replacements for players like McIntyre for example.Morris Finley is not a pg of a high level and if the Russians manage to keep low the already tired McIntyre then they will have the absolute advantage for the win.At the first game Cska was totally outrebounded by her opponents and also committed many turnovers but i do not expect Siena to have the courage to play so agressive today and my prediction is a home win by a dd.

A.E.K. – Olympiacos

This is a little big in my eyes and even though i think its gonna be relatively close, i prefer this handi than going for 12 which at pinnacle is offered at higher odds (1,95) since Aek has shown repeatedly this year a tendency to blow off during the last minutes of the game (i.e. vs. Panellinios, Panionios both at home).

I was reading Oly statements ahead of this match and nobody seems to deal with this match ahead of the Sunday Cup final against the big opponent in the first of the many expected H2H this year.What is more Pargo is probably out and Printezis (probably the most in form player for reds currently) and Papaloukas are probably going to play but they missed a couple of trainings and Yiannakis is possible going to give them some chance to rest ahead of the derby. Oly in relatively decent form, but still not playing great and not in a state they can thrash anybody especially teams that have an extra motive and seem consistent in defense.

The hosts are one of those teams, they got a tremendous win at Panellinios playing very mature basketball and being consistent till the end with a Nemeth giving a real performance, being voted the MVP of this round with a very high 99 votes. Coach Flevarakis seems to be finding some chemistry lately and Aek is always reliable at home, certainly they are not the favorites but i still think this -13 somewhat underestimates them against a team with limited concentration on this one at the moment. Full team for the hosts tomorrow and i have to admit i wouldn’t be surprised if they keep it close till the end. There is however a chance of them being choked offensively but i think Oly will have some troubles in this department as well vs. a very concentrated team in the back part that has learned to control the pace (only PG Thompson is a threat to that, but Flevarakis seems to know the tricks on him). Medium staking here. GL!

Panelllinios – Khimki Moscow

Khimki is an unrealiable team these days.Delfino is doubtful as he did not receive the paycheck for a while and even when he plays he seems unmotivated and gives an impression of a guy who wants a way out.Moiso is gone and there s a hole under the basket as Lampe is injured and did not play for a while also.New signing Varda did not play for a long time due to an injury and he is unprepared.So,coach Scariolo has only one prepared and competitive player at the center position,Mike Wilkinson,as Garbajosa is still playing on the perimeter,and defense surely has not become his strenght lately.And they are living and dying from the outside shooting,in their last eurocup game against Dynamo last tuesday they were shooting 11/24 behind the arc just to stay in the game,which they eventually lost by 8 and were dominated in the paint,loosing the rebounding battle by 9(32/23).Palacio and McCarthy will be on their level but that may be not enough to win this one.

And Panellinios has also lost a match against Maroussi and they were also unpleasantly dominated in the paint(rebs-37/23 for Maroussi).That does not sounds good,but I believe it was just a bad day,not anything more.They are strong home team,they are even deeper now with Shakur,and I am sure that Newley and Kalaitzis cannot have two bad games in a row.From inside I expect near to total domination with Radenovic,Golemac and Ostojic and with solid performance from Grundy this should be a home win.Panellinios win with mid stakes,GL!

Kepez Belediyesi – Aliaga Petkim

Kepez lost to Fenerbahce Ulker with 97-77 last week. But they have some injury and sick players. Robert Traylor, Hakan Erol and Dorren Keith Mclinton were flu and they were at hospital some days before Fenerbahce Ulker match. Levent Bilgin and Melih didn’t play because of their injury. But this week all players are ready.

Kepez is in 14. place with 4 win 13 lost. They won 4 match in last 8 weeks. They beat Erdemir, Casa Ted and Besiktas at home with their new coach Halil Uner. Their new player Gerald Fitch played two games. He scored 29 and 25 points in this two games. Edmund Saunders and Robert Traylor are Kepez’s other scorer players. Hakan, Baris and Berent are young and talent players.

Aliaga beat league’s worst team Casa Ted (1-16) with 83-79 after 4 straight lost. Reese, Davis, Wilmont and new player Lamar Johnson scored double digits points. They have good Turkish players Fatih Solak and Reha. But in my opinion they are in a bad form anyway Aliaga’s away performance is not well. They lost last 4 away games. They are in 10. place with 8 win 9 lost.

Kepez’s first target is stay in TBL for next season. But experienced coach Halil Uner will try to deserve play off. For playoff firstly they have to win home games. Kepez will be desirous in this game. Aliaga is not in a good form. Gerald Fitch give much energy for Kepez so Kepez will win this home game with fans and with their master coach Halil Uner. My pick is Kepez Belediyesi.

Olympiacos – Tau Ceramica

Olympiacos meets at home Tau Ceramica as a slight favorite by 3 points.At the first game the Reds were defeated by Armani Milano away from home and that means that a second consecutive win would create many problems to the club and would jeopardize Olympiacos’ chances to enter the quarter-finals.Tau Ceramica,maybe the “hottest” team in Europe at this moment started with an easy win against Prokom at home in a game that Splitter’s absence did not cost at all to the Spanish squad.Anyway even if Tiaggo was in bookies would set the same lines IMO so that gives an advantage to everyone who wants to back Olympiacos here.For the Greek team everybody seems healthy at the moment and normally Yannakis will have a full-roster team tomorrow.

I will back the Reds here as at home Olympiacos presents a totally different face in every game.I do not count the game vs LeMans as it was a match without great interest.Under the basket i think the big guys of Olympiacos will prevail with one way or another.Of course it will not be an absolute domination like other games of Oly but again without Splitter the Spanish team loses much of her power.Barac and Mc Donald will have problem to face Sofoclis Schortsanitis and maybe they will face a foul problem.Teletovic is not in a great form and in a battle against a player like Bourousis who also likes to shoot outside the 3-point line i expect the Greek center to make a better performance.The key will be the pressure upon Pablo Prignioni i think and if Yannakis’ defense manage to keep the Argentinian in a low tempo then players like Racosevic,Vidal or Michael will also have a difficult work to do.
